"Piinatud hinged"
Publication date: 24.01.2012
How and whether to be like everyone else? When to trust the mind and when to trust the feelings? Who is to blame for what happened years ago? Is love always enough?
"Tortured Souls" is Kristel Kriisa's second youth novel. The book is a fascinating and thought-provoking story about two sisters who live in an old dilapidated farm in an ancient lane, where mice and painful memories sneak around at night. The sisters are called the fairies of Hiiesoo, because it seems to many that there is something mystical hidden in them. Despite everything, the girls, whose real names are Säde and Lee, try to behave as normally as possible. But soon the shadows of the past come to haunt them and it becomes increasingly difficult to behave normally...
"Piinatud hinged" took second place in the 2011 youth novel competition of Kirjastuse Tänapäev and the Estonian Children's Literature Center.

The whole stood motionless, hands in the pockets of the black jacket, long shoulder-length hair at the mercy of the icy gusts of wind, and looked wordlessly up at Säde's window. The girl's eyes were fixed on the night. He held his breath and felt his heartbeat humming in his ears. As if fearing that Ruben would disappear as suddenly as last time, he focused on the boy's figure in the snow and bit his lip...

Inspiration...
... came quite unexpectedly for the second book and tormented me for quite a long time before I finally started writing. I got a lot of ideas while walking through the forest to work in the morning. Again, listening to music helped a lot. Here is a list of songs I listened to a lot while writing Tortured Souls.
- Jeff Buckley "Hallelujah"
- Metric "All Yours"
- Oort "Meil on elu keset metsa"
- Jäääär "Viimane tramm"
- Hele Kõre "Olematu laul"
- Eminem ft. Rihanna "Love the Way You Lie"
- Jääboiler "Lumevärv"
